Natal chart

What is a natal chart?

A birth chart is a map of the sky at the moment of birth. ASTRUM uses it as a starting point for a calm conversation about habits, strengths and relationships.

Brief explanations help you read without specialist knowledge. Astrological terms describe a symbolic method, not scientifically established personality traits.

A natal chart (also called a birth chart) is a map of the sky at one specific moment and place: the moment of your birth. The astronomical part is not in dispute — the ecliptic longitude of the Sun, Moon, and planets at that instant can be calculated from well-established orbital mechanics (see Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms). A chart plots these calculated positions onto a 360-degree wheel, along with two further reference points derived from your birth time and location: the Ascendant (the point of the ecliptic rising on the eastern horizon) and the Midheaven (the point crossing the local meridian).

Reading a chart layers three kinds of information. The first layer is astronomical fact: exact ecliptic longitudes, the sign each body occupies, and the angular distances (aspects) between them — all of it reproducible from the same birth data by any correctly implemented ephemeris. The second layer is structural: the chart is divided into twelve houses, sectors tied to your local horizon and meridian rather than to the zodiac itself. The third layer is symbolic interpretation — the meanings traditionally assigned to planets, signs, houses, and aspects. That third layer is a centuries-old interpretive tradition, not a measurement, and it is not treated the same way in this project's own reports: technical facts are calculated once and never altered, while the narrative built on top of them is always clearly kept separate (see "Calculation vs. interpretation").

Because a chart is anchored to a specific date, time, and place, the same birth data always produces the same chart — recomputing it never changes the underlying facts, only how much of the sky can be included (see "Exact vs. unknown birth time" for what happens when the time of day is missing).
